Five Vehicle Crash Claims Life Of One, Injures Three Others
Wednesday at approximately 6:20 a.m., Amarillo Police Department officers responded to the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Triangle Drive on a major crash involving five vehicles and three pedestrians.
The preliminary investigation indicates a Chevrolet pickup pulling a trailer turned southbound onto Lakeside Drive and was struck by a northbound pickup. Following the initial collision, occupants of both vehicles exited and were standing on Lakeside Drive.
A northbound Toyota SUV was able to avoid the initial crash. A northbound Jeep SUV swerved in an attempt to avoid it but was struck from the rear by a Mitsubishi SUV. The impact caused the Jeep to strike the three pedestrians who were outside their vehicles. The Jeep and Mitsubishi both collided with the rear of the Toyota SUV.
One of the pedestrians, Richard Hayes, age 67, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later passed away. Two additional pedestrians and the driver of the Jeep SUV were also transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
The investigation remains ongoing.
